Mizuki Shindo

Mizuki Shindo was born in Japan and started playing the flute at the age of nine. She was awarded BMus at the Tokyo University of the Arts in 2010 and graduated MMus from Guildhall School of Music and Drama in 2011 where she studied with Ian Clarke, Philippa Davies and Sharon Williams. At the Guildhall, she studied the orchestra course doing the 'Side-by-Side' scheme with the London Symphony Orchestra and London Philharmonic Orchestra. She also studied with Mathieu Dufour in Chicago where she won the position of the Orchestra Academy of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra at the youngest age in 2008.

She has been invited to a large number of music festivals such as the Kyoto French Music Academy, Hamamatsu International Music Festival, and Kirishima International Music Festival, where she has studied with Emily Beynon since 2004. She was awarded the Kirishima International Music Prize from Emily Beynon in 2009, and recieved a scholarship in 2011. She has also played as a flutist in the Kirishima Music Festival Orchestra with her since 2004.

Mizuki has played as a principal flutist under Sir Colin Davies, Marc Andreae, Gerhard Bosse, James Gaffigan, Paul Wynne Griffiths, Tatsuya Shimono, and Kenichiro Kobayashi,and she was appointed a Co-Principal flautist of Southbank Sinfonia, London in 2012.

A keen chamber musician, she has given many chamber concerts in Japan and the UK especially as a member of Himawari Winds(Wind Quintet), Sage Trio(Fl,Cl&Pf) and Trio Frange(Fl,Sax&Pf). She has also done collaborating projects with dancers and actors including with her improvisation performances in London. Her performances have been given at many prestigious venues including Barbican Hall, Cadogan Hall, Royal Festival Hall, Royal Opera House, and Royal Albert Hall.

Mizuki has been awarded numerous prizes in competitions including 1st prize at the Contemporary Music Competition (Japan, 2010), 2nd prize at the 54th Japan Student Music Competition, and Finalist of Croydon Concerto Competition and the 5th Tokyo Music Competition (2007). She has performed as a soloist with Tokyo Symphony Orchestra , Guildford Symphony Orchestra, and Croydon Symphony Orchestra, and will perform J. Ibert Concerto with Southbank Sinfonia this coming September.
