Manda Dorj with Claire James - 4hands on one piano

The Dolly Suite, Op. 56, is a collection of pieces for piano four-hands by Gabriel Fauré. It consists of short pieces written or revised between 1893 and 1896, to mark the birthdays and other events in the life of the daughter of the composer's mistress. The suite, consisting of six short pieces, each with its own title.

Fauré wrote or revised the pieces between 1893 and 1896, for Hélène Bardac (1892–1985), known to her family as Dolly (she was later Madame Gaston de Tinan). She was the young daughter of the singer Emma Bardac, with whom Fauré had a long-running affair. He was in the practice of sending pieces of music, in manuscript, to mark Dolly's birthdays and other family occasions.

Berceuse:-  Allegretto moderato. The Berceuse, marking Dolly's first birthday, was a very early piece, composed in 1864 for Suzanne Garnier, the daughter of a family friend. In 1893 Fauré made some small amendments and changed its title from "La Chanson dans le jardin" to "Berceuse" – that is, a cradle song.

Mi-a-ou:- Allegro vivo. "Mi-a-ou" was written for Dolly's second birthday in June 1894. The title does not refer to a pet cat, as has often been supposed,but to Dolly's attempts to pronounce the name of her elder brother Raoul, who later became one of Fauré's favourite pupils. The young Dolly called her brother Messieu Aoul, which Fauré took as the original title for the piece.In his finished manuscript the title is shortened to "Miaou" (without hyphens). The Fauré scholar Robert Orledge writes that the title "Mi-a-ou", like that of the "Kitty-valse" later in the suite, is the responsibility of Fauré's publisher, Hamelle.

Le jardin de Dolly:- Andantino. The third section of the suite, "Le jardin de Dolly", was composed as a present for New Year's Day 1895. It contains a quotation from Fauré's First Violin Sonata, composed 20 years earlier.The Fauré scholar Jean-Michel Nectoux considers this "perhaps the jewel of the suite, with its lovely tune, moving harmonies and limpid, subtle counterpoint."

Kitty-valse:-  Tempo di valse. The fourth piece is no more feline in its reference than "Mi-a-ou". The Bardacs' pet dog was called Ketty, and in Fauré's manuscript the piece is called "Ketty-Valse". Nectoux calls this piece "a kind of whirling portrait" of the animal.

Tendresse:- Andante. "Tendresse", written in 1896, was originally dedicated to Adela Maddison, wife of a music publisher. Like "Le Jardin de Dolly", this piece is lyrical, but is in a more modern style, making use of chromaticism such as Fauré later deployed in his Nocturnes.

Le pas espagnol:- Allegro. The suite ends with a Spanish dance, a lively and picturesque piece of scene-painting, in the style of España by Fauré's friend Emmanuel Chabrier.

2) Brahms Sixteen Waltzes, Op. 39 is a set of 16 short waltzes for piano four hands written by Johannes Brahms. They were composed in 1865, and published two years later, dedicated to Eduard Hanslick.[1] These waltzes were also arranged for piano solo by the composer, in two different versions – difficult and simplified. The three versions were published at the same time, and sold well, contrary to the composer's expectations. In the solo versions, some of the keys were altered from the original duet version (the last four in the difficult version and No. 6 in the easy version). Waltz Number 15 in A major (or A-flat major) has acquired a life of its own. An arrangement of five of the waltzes (Nos. 1, 2, 11, 14, and 15) for two pianos, four hands was published after the composer's death.

3) Debussy Marche Ecossaise :- Debussy's Marche Ecossaise, originally written in the form of a piano duet at the request of a Scottish general.

 

Artist info:-

Mandakhtuya Dorj started her musical career at the age of five. She later attended Music and Dance College in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia before arriving in the UK to continue her studies at the Junior Academy of the Royal Academy of Music, London.  Manda was fortunate enough to receive a full scholarship for duration of her four year course and during her time at the Academy, studied with Professor Patsy Toh.

As a soloist, Manda has many well received recitals at the Duke’s Hall at the Royal Academy of Music, Salvation Army Hall in Oxford Circus in London, RNCM Concert Hall, Holland Park School for Mikhail Gorbachev, and Festival Hall in Mongolia in front of the president of Mongolia.

Manda is keen to explore contemporary piano repertoire. Her recent well received recital was playing George Crumb Makrokosmos Vol.1 at the RNCM American Festival. During the time at the RNCM, Manda has learnt so much through participating in all  the music festivals and as well as attending the master classes from the top artists such as Andras Schiff, Imogen Cooper, Alfred Brendel, Steven Osbourne and Steven Hough. In February 2010, she had the privilege to meet Murray Perahia at the Bridgewater Hall, Manchester.

She has won numerous international prizes in Mongolia, France and in the UK.  Her BMus Degree at the Royal Northern College of Music, Manchester, was complete under the tutelage of the Deputy Head of Keyboard Study, Helen Krizos.

In her spare time, Manda likes to travel, read books, hike in the countryside with friends and family.

Claire James grew up in Lincolnshire where she began learning the piano and flute at an early age. She gained Grade 8 piano at the age of 13, Grade 8 flute at the age of 14 and by 2006 had achieved the ABRSM Diploma in Piano Performance. In 2011, Claire graduated from the Royal Northern College of
Music with a First Class honours degree, having studied piano with Sallyann McLeod. In the same year, she won the RNCM John Ireland Prize and the Principle’s Prize for Improvisation. She has had lessons with Phillipe Cassard, Nelson Goener and Michel Beroff and has performed across the UK. Claire is also a keen jazz pianist who has had master classes with Kenny Wheeler and Nikki Iles. She has performed with Tina May, Jiggs Whigham, John Taylor, Gwilym Simcock and Diana Torto and her trio have appeared at the Manchester Jazz Festival and the London Jazz Festival, as well as during the BBC Proms Plus Series which was broadcast on BBC Radio 3. The Claire James Trio EP was released on the Manchester-based Epfi label, and waswell received nation-wide.

Bristol Cathedral is situated in the middle of the city at the bottom of Park Street. It was founded in 1140, but was built gradually over a period of 700 years. The Cathedral hosts numerous events and concerts throughout the year. Many of these are open to the public, and some are free, including the regular lunchtime concerts on Tuesdays.
